This is a humble attempt to draw the attention of the Muslims to finding a lasting solution to the perennial problem, which often degenerates into controversy regarding the beginning and ending of every Ramadan fasting in Nigeria. Neither the Muslim jurists, the elite nor the masses enjoy the sad events. Nevertheless until recently, the deserving attention is never given to the chronic issue because as soon as the time heals the wounds, thinking about it is suspended until the time comes around to re-open the sore in the following year. The aim of this work is to take a critical look at the relevant Islamic texts (nass), glance at historical development of the problem, relate the scholarly opinions of the jurists and appraise the pragmatic approaches of our predecessors in other parts of the world with a view to highlighting the formulae which are capable of moving us forward and nearer to providing permanent solution to the problem in Nigeria.
