Summary: BRIGADIER DAVID M. JEMIBEWON was Military Government of Western State, and then Oyo State, between 1975 and 1978. He is now commandant, Nigerian Army School of Infantry, Jaji, and Kaduna.
A seasoned combatant soldier who has been service in many parts of the world, Brigadier Jemibewon has proved to be a most astute military governor. Perhaps his most outstanding achievements were his skilful handling of the student crisis and the Land use Decree issue in Ibadan and Oyo State in general.
The theme of this book is the nature and problems of military leadership. In the first part, Brigadier Jemibewon examines the history of military rule in Nigeria, beginning with the coup in 1966 and continuing with the administrations of Major General Ironsi, Yakubu Gowon, General Murtala Muhammed and Lt. General Olusegun Obasanjo. In the second part, through his experience as military government he describes the major issues and decisions of his administration, such as the break-up of the western state into three states and problems arising from chieftaincy matters.
This is the first book to have been written by a member of the Nigerian military and its particular interest lies in the human angle which shows the texture and fabric as well as the complexities of the decision making processes, and the especial problems encountered by one man (in this case a combatant soldier) when he governs with a largely civilian cabinets.
Brigadier Jemibewon is keen sportsman and married and has five children.
